Intrastromal Corneal Rings
Intrastromal Corneal Rings are custom made plastic ring segments that are inserted into a specially made channel in the cornea created by a femtosecond laser, and they act to flatten the cornea into a more normal shape. This usually reduces dependence on contact lenses. They may be used in conjunction with crosslinking but are also often performed as a standalone procedure, depending on the individual clinical scenario. This keratoconus treatment procedure is typically largely pain free and is done using anaesthetic drops.
